A seizure of 200 kg of cannabis, heroin and methamphetamine was made off the coast of Reunion Island on Thursday October 31, according to a press release from the prefecture published on Saturday November 2, 2024.
This drug was intercepted on board a small coaster-type boat, during an operation carried out approximately 180 km north of the island by the Armed Forces in the Southern Indian Ocean Zone (FAZSOI).
Anti-drug operation: a fight against the destabilization of the region
Local authorities welcomed this seizure as a strong act illustrating “France's determination to fight against drug trafficking”, which they consider to be a major risk for the stability of regional partners. Carried out by a FAZSOI surveillance frigate, this operation is part of efforts to block illicit flows of drugs and goods, which threaten security, health and social stability in the region.
A blow to criminal organizations in the Indian Ocean
The prefecture recalled that these seizures directly impact criminal organizations by depriving them of essential capital. By doing so, law enforcement helps to weaken trafficking networks and protect regional partners in the Indian Ocean.
