Michelin announced Tuesday the closure before 2026 of its Cholet and Vannes sites. The management of the French tire manufacturer has decided to close its factory in Cholet (Maine-et-Loire), established for 54 years. 1000 employees are affected by this decision.
This decision is driven by the Asian competition on van and heavy goods vehicle tires, but also the “deterioration of Europe's competitiveness” according to management.
Weeks of worry
An announcement which comes after several weeks of concern. “Today we face a difficult test, a shock to many of us. The news that is coming will be hard to hear and take. Faced with this reality, let's take the time to breathe, to take a step back. Let us not forget the importance of our mental well-being in these moments,” writes the union South Michelin Cholet.
Denis Masséglia, Ensemble pour la République deputy for the 5th constituency of Maine-et-Loire, referred the matter to the Economic Affairs Commission of the National Assembly so that Michelin management could be heard.
Following Michelin's announcement to close the Cholet site, the employees decided to go on strike.
