A fire broke out this Tuesday morning in a 31m high silo containing coal, in Beaucaire, route de Saint-Gilles, in the industrial zone (November 5, 2024). Firefighters have been on site since 3:30 a.m. The silo belongs to the Calcia company, cement factory, a SEVESO classified industrial establishment which is located in the industrial zone of Beaucaire. The fire started in the lower part of the silo which contains 512 m3 of coal.
This silo supplies a boiler room, as part of the cement manufacturing process. The Gard fire brigade and the factory security service carried out the cooling of the silo from the outside by means of fire hoses and the integrated silo cooling system and silo inerting.
No injuries or technical unemployment are not to be deplored. 17 fire engines, command and medical aid resources from SDIS 30 representing a workforce of 32 firefighters are engaged in this long-term fire.
The fire is being treated and the risk of spread to neighboring establishments is avoided. The circumstances of this fire are at this stage unknown.
The Gard firefighters are asking the population to do not go there so as not to hinder emergency services. The operation continues.
In August 2023, a fire had already broken out on this siteon a refrigeration building. It was quickly brought under control, and there were no injuries there either.
The Beaucair factory of the company Ciments Calcia is singled out for being one of the 50 most polluting industrial sites in the country. The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, promised in November 2022 several billion euros to help them decarbonize their activity.
