Sébastien Populaire is mayor of the small town of Touillon-et-Loutelet near the ski resort of Métabief (Doubs) and the reliefs of Mont d'Or (1463m), which overlook the Swiss plain.

He was lucky to get up at the right time. Sunday, around 9:30 a.m., he and his wife saw an astonishing avalanche of clouds appear in the distance. A bit like milk suddenly overflowing from a saucepan. The elected official then decides to head to the heights of his commune around 1050 m above sea level to better observe the phenomenon.

It was very impressive. It looked like a waterfall of clouds. This lasted most of the morning. I have only one regret, not having gone to the foot of this waterfall to see the fog die away.

The clouds were coming from neighboring Switzerland, from the canton of Vaud. They poured out, unrolled like on a carpet, as if by magic once they arrived on the peaks of the Jura. Watch the video below.

We asked the question to Ilyes Ghouil, a well-known forecaster in Franche-Comté for his Météo-Franc-Comtoise Facebook page. He shared the video.

“Yesterday, as for several days, Switzerland was covered in fog. Then the ceiling of fog rose. They were pushed towards the Jura mountains by a rather cool east wind. It was 10 degrees in Switzerland near Yverdon, Lausanne, or Neuchâtel” says the young meteorologist.

The cold air met much warmer air over Haut-Doubs, where it was 15-20 degrees. There was a Foehn effect. The cold air, the mists came to flow on the slopes of the Jura mountains. The fogs gradually collapsed.

In France, the foehn effect occurs in several mountainous regions such as the Jura, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Alps, Vosges or Cévennes. It fascinates image-hunting photographers like Jura resident Nicolas Gascard.

This is not the first time that this phenomenon has been observed in the Jura massif sector and the foothills of Mont d'Or. In 2018 and 2020, 2021, residents were able to see with the naked eye this strange avalanche of clouds pouring down on them. Four friends had the chance to observe the spectacle at sunrise.

The weather forecasts for the next few days, a very present anticyclone, and fog in the Swiss plains, could cause this phenomenon again.
