In Dordogne, those who like to walk along the Isle and its tributaries may have noticed: several construction sites have flourished there since the end of summer. The unpredictable weather delayed their progress for the most part. But what is it about?
In Savignac-les-Églises, a dead arm was reconnected to the river at the beginning of October. At this location, machines have restored the sinuosity of an island that land consolidation has made rectilinear, causing eutrophication and the impoverishment of its waters. In Chancelade, poplars were felled near the Got stream to restore an existing wetland.
In Brouchaud and Boulazac-Isle-Manoire, sediment recharge work must take place between now and winter, in Blâme and Manoire respectively. The idea in these two cases is to “restore current” to the watercourses, by re-establishing layers of sediment in an artificial way, as explained by Thomas Chamboeuf, aquatic environments technician at the mixed union of the Bassin de la Basin. 'Isle (SMBI).
“Complementary”
Reshaping the meanders, putting “shoals and shallows” back into the beds of these waters, all this work which is the subject of numerous projects, small or large, set to multiply in the Isle basin , is carried out with an overall goal: “renaturing” these aquatic environments for the benefit of biodiversity, summarizes Thomas Chamboeuf.
This work is part of a plan for water management, aquatic environments and flood prevention (Gemapi), whose responsibility has been entrusted to intercommunal authorities since 2014. The Water Agency, as well as the Department and the Region participates in the financing of related projects, with very variable budgets.
“All these actions are complementary and will not be done in one year,” specifies Thomas Chamboeuf. Placed end to end, they will contribute to the enrichment of fish fauna, for example by creating new spawning grounds for fish or amphibians, which themselves will encourage the proliferation of certain insects.
