Five key figures from Isee revealing the extent of the crisis in New Caledonia since May 2024

The Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of New Caledonia published, on October 30, figures representative of the situation in the territory since the events of May. The results are alarming.

Nearly six months after the events of May 13, Isee has outlined an initial assessment of the consequences of the crisis on economic activities in New Caledonia. Here are 5 key figures.

110,000 fewer salaried jobs in the private sector since March 2024

In the private sector, one employee in six lost their job between March and September. The industrial and commercial sectors are the most affected. To obtain this figure, Isee relied on the number of employees with an active employment contract “on the last day of the quarter with a private sector employer”.

+ 398.8% in the South province

In 2023, according to the indicator of the monthly number of registrations and cancellations, in the Ridet (the directory of businesses and establishments) of independent workers and companies, the balance (registrations – cancellations) was – 166. When this This is negative, there is a drop in the number of active businesses. In 2024, the balance is -828. This means that there has been an increase of 398.8% in one year.

+ 36.7% in the North province

In 2023, according to the indicator of the monthly number of registrations and cancellations at Ridet, the balance (registrations – cancellations) was – 98 compared to – 134 in 2024. There are therefore 36.7% additional companies which do not are no longer active in the Northern province in 2024.

+ 7.7% in the Islands province

In 2023, according to the indicator of the monthly number of registrations and cancellations at Ridet, the balance (registrations – cancellations) was – 65 compared to – 70 in 2024. There are therefore 7.7% additional companies which do not are more active this year in the Province of the Islands.

3May 2024: a drop in mining activity of 67.4%

In May 2024, according to an indicator that measures the quantity of raw ore extracted each month by mining operators without taking into account the nickel content, mining extraction decreased by 67.4% compared to May 2023. In August 2024 , mining extraction decreased by 69.8% compared to August 2023.

420% reduction in trade balance

Between 2023 and 2024, the trade balance, that is to say the difference between exports and imports, decreased by 20% from one year to the next. For example, in August 2024, exports decreased by 68% compared to the previous year. Imports fell by 38%.

5+ 6% of the food price index

The index makes it possible to estimate the average change in the prices of goods and services consumed by all New Caledonian households, focusing on the 20% of poorer households. Between 2023 and 2024, the food price index increased by 6%, which has consequences for the purchasing power of households in New Caledonia.
