They thought it would never happen. And yet! Since April 15, 2024, drivers of category L vehicleswhich includes the motosbut also the mopedsTHE scooters from 50 cm3and the cars without a licensemust have their engine capacities checkedlike motorists. An obligation which, despite still lively dispute of the Angry bikersended up establishing itself among handlebar fans.
Bikers there
In Vendée, most of the auto technical centers have adapted. They trained their controllers to ensure 80 regulatory checkpoints which concern the identification of the vehicle: the steering (handlebars, column, fork crown, shock absorbers), the horns, the speedometer, the mirrors, the chassis which includes the frame, the stand, the transmission, the tank, the circuit fuel tank, fairing, seat, riding controls, as well as brakes, tires, bearings and lighting.
“The bikers are there,” assures Bertrand Billaud, president of the technical inspection branch of the National Automobile Federation (FNA 85) and manager of four Dekra centers in La Roche-sur-Yon, Aizenay and Le Poiré -survival. Tuesday October 29, in his workshop on Boulevard de l'Industrie in La Roche-sur-Yon, Bertrand Billaud invited riders and partners for a motorcycle Technical Inspection (CT) demonstration.
Pascal Flandrin, network director of Dekra France, present, confirms the good momentum. “In France, since April, we have been 630,000 technical checks carried out out of a potential of one million,” says the latter. In Vendée, the network director mentions something “ 10,000 checks carried out ».
The department ranks among the good students. “This also means that the Vendée has a lot of bikers,” adds Bertrand Billaud, a little surprised by this rapid launch. “We were apprehensive at the beginning, but the activity quickly became dense with owners who wanted to sell their motorcycles.”
Transaction which can now only be done with this famous CT. The pilots wouldn't be that angry. “We discuss, we explain and things go pretty well,” says the FNA 85 representative.
Scooters missing in action
The first checks reveal a majority of machines rather well maintained. “We only note 10% refusals for motorcycles, due to tire problems, pollution or lack of maintenance,” declares Pascal Frandin. An argument which fuels the discourse of Angry Bikers who, from the start, have assured that this motorcycle inspection is of no use, the drivers being aware of the importance of the good behavior of their mechanical horse.
The inspection also has the merit of highlighting the deplorable state of scooters and cars without a license. “There are 20% refusals for mopeds and 36% for cars without a license,” specifies the network director at Dekra France. These vehicles are rare in the centers. “It must be remembered that this inspection concerns all two wheels from 50 cm3 and cars without a license,” he concludes.
Technical control will tighten in 2025 with new control points, notably noise and the maximum speed of 50 cm3. Without this sesame, pilots are exposed to a fine of 135 euros.
