On the La Grave Béchade estate in Baleyssaguesnear Duras, for the hazelnut subsidiary operated by “Pépinière et Noisetiers de Guyenne”, the harvest is certainly finished, but the poor results are worrying.
Bad harvest for hazelnuts in Lot-et-Garonne
This year, the weather was not favorable, but that is not the only reason for a significant drop in harvest, both qualitative and quantitative.
The main cause would be linked to the worrying attack of pests (mainly balanin and evil bug) which is no longer controllable following the law on biodiversity having led to the withdrawal of phytosanitary products, without leaving France the possibility of using an insecticide capable of fighting this attack, while our European neighbors can, notably Italy, not to mention Turkey and America.
The loss of market and income is worrying.
Nursery and Hazelnut Trees of Guyenne are very well established locally, with around 380 hectares of hazelnut trees, from the selection of the plan to the cultivation until the final processing of the hazelnut. The dynamic team, although concerned with results, is currently working on processing hazelnuts (washing, drying, calibrating, breaking, sorting, re-sorting and packaging the kernels).
The structure benefits from equipment impressivewhich deserves to be discovered through a visit to the premises which is open to the public, preferably by appointment and a charming shop.
