The day of the general policy declaration of the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier from the podium of the National Assembly, was also that of the visit of thirty Clefvalleurois from Senate au Luxembourg PalaceTuesday October 1, 2024.

The municipality of Key Valley of Eure had decided to reward residents who invest and work in the life of the municipality. As the number of places is limited, a draw was held.

The visitors, accompanied by elected officials, were warmly welcomed by the senator of Eure Hervé Maurey (Centrist Union) for a visit to the hemicycle, then joined by the senator Kristina Plush (Les Républicains), which also represents the department.

The visitors took their first steps into the political arena by climbing the main staircase to enter the hemicycle. Hervé Maurey explained to them how the institution works.

“Some citizens have a bad image and knowledge of the Senate,” underlines the elected official. And to explain: “It’s a bit logical, because it’s the local elected officials who elect us. We don’t have the media pressure of public opinion.”

The main role of senators is to examine the bills that the government submits to them. Hervé Maurey specifies that the Senate guarantees the stability of institutions.

“The Senate is the second assembly. We are adopting a lot of amendments. By its constitution, the specificity of our assembly is to represent local communities. This is very important, we have a greater concern for our rural areas than anywhere else. »

The visit continued with a visit to the Palace, the first stone of which was laid in 1615 by Marie de Medici. Visitors were able to admire the library and its annex. The conference room impressed with its scale, the richness of its decoration and its Second Empire furniture and the throne of Napoleon I.

Évelyne Demante, president of the Friendship Club, appreciated: “The visit was very informative and interesting with a very good guide. I notice that the interior of the Senate is very richly decorated. It reminds me of and the Élysée.”

Mayor Ollivier Lepinteur and his advisors thanked the senators for their kind and open welcome, making this visit particularly pleasant and enriching.

Before returning to the Eure valley, some visitors discovered and appreciated the magnificent Luxembourg Gardens nearby.
