The approximately 230 inhabitants of Olley (Meurthe-et-Moselle), will now be officially known as “Burned asses”reports France Bleu Lorraine Sud Sunday November 3.
This atypical name results from a vote organized over two weeks, where residents were invited to choose a gentile for their commune, which did not yet have one, despite nearly 1,000 years of existence. The result of the vote was announced on Saturday evening: of the eight proposals submitted, “Burned asses” won the most votes.
“The weight of history prevailed, the inhabitants were keen to take on this kindness with pride”rejoiced the mayor, David Buono. The expression dates back to the Middle Ages, when the village produced oil for lamps. This burned at the bottom of the containers, leaving black traces, hence the nickname.
Of the 230 inhabitants of this village located near Jarny, 89 voted, and half of them supported this proposal. The name will be made official at the next municipal council before being transmitted to the prefecture.
