Shortly before 5 p.m., four national police vans approached 3 rue de Trouville in Caen (), in the Half Moon sector. This is where since this Saturday, November 2, 2024, a new squat has been “officially open”, as presented by AG activists fighting against all evictions.

The police came to observe the occupation of a private building, which housed, for several years, the La Chiffo construction workshop. From the outside, no signs of life were visible this late afternoon.

No evacuation

However, inside, around fifty people have found refuge there as the cold begins to be felt in the middle of autumn 2024. Many were residing until a few days ago in the vast building of the 15 Orne roundaboutnear the port, evacuated by the police on Tuesday October 29, three days before the start of the winter break.

“Since then, some have slept in other squats, in cars, and there has also been a lot of solidarity,” confides an activist from the AG fighting against all evictions who affirms that the first occupants of the new squat in rue de Trouville arrived Thursday October 31. “Here there is about twenty children who have a roof over their heads, including children attending the Henri Brunet school. »

A project of 111 housing units to be built

On site, conditions are precarious. Inside, the water and electricity have been cut off for several months by the owner. According to a friend of the owner, the 2,500 m2 warehouse is used to store equipment. “There is also a housing construction project,” he explains. A sign presenting the building permit dated July 5, 2024 shows 111 housing units to be built and eight to be renovated.
“The important thing is that we have a roof, especially since it’s starting to get cold,” says a resident.
