A museum dedicated to street Art and urban cultures in Île-de-France? This is the very exciting project which should see the light of day in Seine-Saint-Denis by 2028 as part of the renewal of the Rail Cathedrals. Called “l’Aérosol Saint-Denis”, this new cultural venue will be located in these former railway halls listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments.
Good news for fans of urban cultures. The department of Seine-Saint-Denis should welcome by 2028 a big one museum dedicated to street art and hip-hop culture. His name? “The Aerosol Saint-Denis”. And it should take place on the site of the famous “ Rail Cathedrals » located in 93.
Abandoned since 1990, these immense railway halls, with an area of 8,400 m², will be rehabilitated. At the time, these impressive hangars were intended for the maintenance of SNCF trains. Since 2004, these halls have been included in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments. By 2028, these “ Rail Cathedrals » will therefore host a museum entirely dedicated to street art and hip-hop culture.
This follows a call for projects launched in 2021 by SNCF Real Estatein partnership with the City of Saint-Denis and Plaine Commune. Recently, Eiffage Aménagement and Equans France were named winners of this renovation project. An ambitious and large-scale project which therefore includes the construction of a new eco-responsible and sustainable neighborhood and the creation of a museum, “ Aerosol Saint-Denis »all on a 6 hectare railway wasteland.
The museum will be supported by Hip Hop Citizens et Maquis-Artwho was already at the origin of the ephemeral spot “L'Aérosol” opened in 2017 in the 18th arrondissement of Paris.
Thanks to the incredible volumes of the two Cathedrals (19 meters high ceilings) and the industrial architecture, “ l’Aerosol Saint-Denis » will offer « an unprecedented enhancement of the works » is explained in a press release. What about programming? THE museum dedicated to street art and hip-hop culture intends to focus on a varied cultural offering with expositionsof the general public eventsor even privatizations.
« The Rail Cathedrals are today a heritage and tomorrow will be a formidable incarnation of the transformation of an industrial past into a project of cities united around cultural issues, resilience and influence. The City of Saint-Denis and the territory of Plaine Commune will continue to embody hip-hop culture and be the center of gravity of urban cultures » said in the same press release Mathieu HanotinMayor of Saint-Denis.
So, can't wait to open the doors of this immense museum dedicated to street art and at hip-hop ? We do not yet know the exact opening date. But if everything goes as planned, then this large museum should open its doors by 2028. We recall that this project is part of the dynamic of the City of Saint-Denis' candidacy to become European Capital of Culture in 2028. And there is no doubt that this future Ile-de-France cultural venue installed on the site of the “ Rail Cathedrals » in Saint-Denis will cause a lot of talk.
