The start of the 6th edition of the Rallye des îles du Soleil was given this Friday, November 1, from La Palma, in the Canaries, to the bay of Saint-Louis de Marie-Galante, in Guadeloupe. This year, Maryse Etzol, president of the Community of Communes of Marie-Galante (CCMG), is participating in this transatlantic race that she saw born. Beyond the sporting challenge, for the mayor of Grand-Bourg, it is above all a question of taking up the cause of obesity and diabetes in Guadeloupe.
She set sail this Friday, November 1, alongside the 26 registered for the 6th edition of the transatlantic flotilla, the Rally of the Islands of the Sun, linking La Palma, in the Canary Islands to the bay of Saint-Louis de Marie -Galante, in Guadeloupe. Maryse Etzol, president of the Community of Communes of Marie-Galante (CCMG), also mayor of Grand-Bourg, is not afraid. She is participating in this transatlantic race that she saw born, for the sporting challenge, of course, but also to send a message about the very important problems of obesity and diabetes in the Antilles.
“It is above all a health and humanist action that pushes me to take up this challenge!” can we read on Maryse Etzol’s Facebook page.
Currently, in Guadeloupe 12% of the population carries one (or more) of these chronic diseases while in France they are 4%. The serious and alarming complications will make us a population with more infirmities and cripples in 20 to 30 years if we do not take control.

Before setting sail for Marie-Galante, the 26 registered sailboats will have to complete a first stage, in Mindelo in Cape Verde. The first boats of this nautical crossing of more than 3,000 miles should reach the Bay of Saint-Louis by the end of November.
