Trapped by the tide, hikers rescued by boat in Côtes-d'Armor

With its 15 km of coastline and its 3,000 hectares of public maritime domain, the Pleubian sector (Côtes-d'Armor) is one of the sensitive sectors during high tides, and the point most exposed to risks remains the Sillon by Talbert. Thursday October 31, 2024, late in the afternoon, hikers were once again trapped by the tide beyond the Sillon breach.

They were rescued by the SNSM semi-rigid boat from Loguivy-de-la-Mer, in Ploubazlanec, and were welcomed ashore by the coastal guardian, Julien Houron.

This is reminiscent of other events of this kind.

Currents that can be violent

On September 16, four people were also rescued by firefighters. A year earlier, at the same time, six adults and two children were also trapped on the archipelago and were able to be brought back safely by the emergency services. In 2023, the municipality's SNSM station indicated that it had intervened eight times in this part of the nature reserve.

In 2018, after storms, a breach formed on the Sillon. The sea rushes in at high tide, preventing walkers who have already passed from returning to dry land. And the currents can be violent. In 2022, two people unfortunately lost their lives.

We therefore remind you to always know the tide times before setting out on the foreshore.
