Trained in Rodez until cadet, passed through Castres in Top 14 and Oyonnax in Pro D2, team with which he was French champion, now aged 36, the man who grew up in Ségur is sports director of Haguenau , in Federal 3.
“I follow Aveyron rugby closely!” Asked about the results almost two weeks ago, Romain Boscus spoke the truth by being also affirmative. He is capable, in fact, of delivering the smallest detail on Rodez's “show of force” at Cassagnes-Bégonhès against Lévézou Ségala or even the “impotence” of Millau against the leader, Les Angles.
“There are lots of great things happening, particularly at the Ruthenian club level, and I am proud of that,” he continues. “But, I continue to think that Aveyron needs a team in Fédérale 1. I would like although it’s Rodez.” With his return suddenly? “It's possible. I'm not closing any doors. But it won't be right away because I still need to see something else, to taste, for example, the professional world.”
Born in Rodez on December 7, 1987, to a father from Ruthenian, who played rugby league in Toulouse, and a mother from Toulouse, he grew up in Ségur, a village where he attended primary school, before the middle school in Pont-de-Salars and the Foch high school in Rodez. “Rather mathematical” (he says so), he was then moving towards a scientific series, but he left the Ruthenian establishment at the end of the second year.
To join Castres and indulge in his passion: rugby, a discipline that he discovered, at the age of 4 and a half, in Rodez, a club to which he remained faithful until his junior year. “I hesitated with Montpellier, but I chose the CO because there was the geographical proximity and especially the fact that Gilbert Pagès had worn the jersey a few years earlier, with the Brennus Shield to boot”. So he sent his application and was called for detections. Even though he was injured during the first workshop, he was kept.
After two years in Crabos juniors, he skipped the Reichel to find himself in Espoirs. And take the plunge in 2007 to discover the Top 14, thanks to the two coaches, Ugo Mola and Laurent Seigne, and taste four seasons among the elite.
There is no shortage of good memories: “The very first match sheet in Bayonne in a crazy atmosphere at the Jean-Dauger stadium, the baptism at Ernest-Wallon against Toulouse in 2008, the two drops of victory in Clermont…” . But, he does not forget to mention Reichel's title of French champion with Castres.
Assistant coach of the Algerian selection
Christophe Urios then called him to Oyonnax, a team with which he won the Pro D2 title in 2013. While he was about to return to the highest level, he was injured (against Aurillac) and the Ain club preferred Benjamin. Urdapilleta. “I suddenly became more acquainted with the behind the scenes of the professional world,” slips the person concerned. As a result, I chose to leave it and return home, to Rodez. Béziers and Montauban had me made some calls, but the decision was natural. I had made up my mind and I also wanted to participate in the development of an amateur club.
He took up residence in September 2013, in Federal 1, and he defended the colors blood and gold for six years, until filing for bankruptcy. After four years at Pamiers, he crossed France, in 2023, to sign for Haguenau, a Fédérale 3 club with nearly 500 members. First as a player, at the opening or at the back, and now as a sports director with, in particular, as a burning issue, the certification of the training center.
“It is not a rugby land and there is no high-level locomotive, notes Romain Boscus. It therefore takes more time, but nothing is impossible… So I have to get out of my zone comfort!” He says more about his trajectory and his ambitions: “I am in my element. What I am experiencing today suits me well and fits my abilities. Despite my experience of almost two decades as an educator and “coach, I need to take the time. I don't want to skip the steps or go too quickly. My goal is to acquire a solid foundation.
What if Haguenau crossed paths with Rodez in the spring, during the final stages of Fédérale 3? Romain Boscus pulls out the only joker in his game, contenting himself with a small smile.
While waiting for this eventuality, the thirty-year-old has, since last April, held another technical role, closer to the field. He is, in fact, the assistant of Adrien Buononato, former coach of Stade français, Soyaux, Limoges, Cognac and… Oyonnax, within the management of the Algeria rugby selection .
After taking part in the African Cup this summer in Uganda, beaten in the final by Zimbabwe, the Algerians are already looking towards the next edition, in July 2025, with the objective of qualifying for the World Cup. 2027 which will take place in Australia.
