– 50 elected officials want the generalization of the Universal National Service

A collective made up of 50 elected officials including the MoDem mayor of Villepreux, Jean-Baptiste Hamonic, Béatrice Piron, Renaissance deputy for the 3rd constituency of (which includes the communes of Clayes-sous- and Villepreux) and Martin Lévrier (Renaissance), senator from Yvelines, calls for the generalization of the SNU (Universal National Service). Published in the newspaper La on October 4, this unprecedented appeal, in the form of a column, defends “a social project, which would promote citizen engagement”, specifies the collective.
The SNU is composed in 2 stages. The 1st, the cohesion stay, lasting 12 days, allows young people to learn life in a community. The 2d, entitled 'time of service to the nation', proposes a mission of general interest of a minimum duration of 84 hours.

Currently, only Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC) is compulsory. The SNU is optional. 800,000 young people aged 15 to 17 would be affected by this generalization. According to elected officials, who rely on a recent Opinion Way survey, 72% of French people would be in favor of this measure. The collective also mentions a satisfaction rate of 96% “among the 90,000 young people involved since 2019”.

« [Le SNU] proves to be the essential cursor to amplify a greater culture of civic engagement and allow our youth to better understand their role and their place in society. This is the reason why its success cannot be complete without its generalization. […] », argue the elected officials.
