The final of the competition for the best Sommelier in will take place in Thuir this Sunday

Laetitia Mathieu, the educational manager of the Thuir Sommellerie Institute was our guest this November 1st morning on Bleu Roussillon, and she is delighted to host this final of the best sommelier competition which only takes place every two years in France: “It’s quite simply the elite of French sommellerie who will compete to win the title and it’s going to be an incredible show.”

Clement Sommier (Maison Berthaudin in Switzerland) Bastien Debono (Restaurant Yoann Conte in Veyrier du Lac) and Quentin Vauleon (Restaurant Frevo in New York) are the three finalists in this Best Sommelier competition organized by the Union of French Sommellerie.

On the program for this final, 7 secret tests: blind tastings, scenarios where wines must be presented to customers… sommellerie, a profession of the future given the careers of former students of the first promotion of the Thuir Sommellerie Institute: “This first year went very well with a very positive outcome for our fifteen students in “bachelor” and in complementary sommelier studies in partnership with the Christian Bourquin high school. I had news again yesterday from a former student who had become manager of a bar in Hong Kong, another is responsible for tourism in the South-West for a public institution. There is one who is a wine merchant, another who is an export sales manager in sommelier. There are really, really. a lot of demand in this sector. Restaurants struggle to find qualified and competent sommeliers. While it’s a wonderful job.”

A sector still buoyant despite the wine crisis

But isn't it paradoxical to host a sommelier competition final in a department hit hard by drought and the wine crisis? Laetitia Mathieu, the educational manager of the Thui ry Sommellerie Institute, on the contrary, sees an opportunity to be seized:

“Precisely, it's in these moments that we have to roll up our sleeves and do incredible things, like hosting this final of the best sommelier in France at our home. The objective, when we have less production, when wine growers suffer, it's really help them promote their production and sell it better. And in this area, sommeliers will be able to help them. This event will put a huge spotlight on local and even regional productions since we have partners throughout the region.”
