The Archaeological Society rewards – Le journal du Gers: Online and continuous news journal covering the news of and Gers

The Gers Archaeological Society had chosen Saturday October 19, in Monferran-Savès for the 13th Gers Archeology Day. At the end of the day, there were the presentations of the Pierre-Dumont 2024 and Messimy prizes which encourage the preservation of heritage.

For the Messimy prize, Saint-Arailles received the prize. This small village of 140 inhabitants has rehabilitated the Notre-Dame de Brétous church and the Saint-Jean d'Anglès chapel. An admirable job, carried out by a small municipal team led by Bernard Lasportes and passionate volunteers. This was the 29th Messimy Prize.

For the Pierre-Dumont Prize, we celebrated the 50th prize! 12 works were in the running for a historical theme this year: a travel album, two family sagas, four monographs, five history or art history books. The big winner is Alain Beyneix, prehistorian, with his work “the tomb of the chief of Pauilhac, an archaeological mystification?”, a fascinating work of quasi-police investigation around this discovery of a tomb in 1865, which becomes a mystification, a real fantasized funerary construction…
