a woman kills herself by falling into a hole formed by floods in Ardèche

The mayor of the hamlet where the victim resided denounced, in The Dauphiné Libéré, the “unacceptable” behavior of curious people who take the damage for an “attraction”.

A woman fell to her death in a hole formed during recent floods on Sunday in Ardèche, we learned from the prefecture. The lady, aged 58, approached a hole that had been created following the latest bad weather on the road in Burzet (Ardèche), the prefecture said in a press release. “The victim would then have fallen into the latter corresponding directly with the La river which would have carried him away for 400 meters”we specify from the same source.

Alerted, the firefighters could only note the death of the victim, in cardio-respiratory arrest, specifies The Dauphiné Libéré . The emergency services were however reinforced by a Dragon 69.

Risk of landslides

The victim lived in the village of Burzet and had traveled on the D 215 to observe the damage, despite the authorities’ ban. The mayor of the hamlet, Jean-Pierre Reymond, deplores this type of dangerous behavior. “It’s become an attraction. There are more and more people coming to see him.”he denounced in the local newspaper.

According to him, even the death of the fifty-year-old did not discourage the irresponsible curious. “A few hours after this lady’s death, two cyclists went around the dam via the parapet. This type of behavior is unacceptable.”he protested.

In its press release, the prefecture calls for “vigilance of all”emphasizing that “the risk of landslides and the level of waterways still very high still constitute real dangers”. While waiting to find a lasting solution, a new security perimeter has been set up in front of the hole to prevent individuals from accessing it.

As a reminder, Ardèche was one of the departments most affected by precipitation. “exceptional” in recent days, which caused devastating floods.
