The absence of female representation hits home

The absence of women parliamentarians within the bodies of the House of Councilors, whether as vice-presidents, secretaries or accountants, as well as at the head of parliamentary groups, has caused significant discontent within feminist movements. .

Several female activists have expressed their indignation at what they consider to be a violation of the principle of female representation in the office of the Council of Advisors, particularly after the election of Mohamed Ould Errachid as president, succeeding Ennam Myara of the party of Istiqlal.

The Défi Association for Equality and Citizenship denounced this situation, describing the vote on the composition of the council bodies as “regressive, undemocratic practice, and in contradiction with the orientations of the Kingdom”.

Bouchra Abdou, president of the association, declared that this approach represents a “democratic backsliding and an attack on the principles of the Constitution. »

She also stressed that this action contradicts the slogans of the member parties of the government coalition, which advocate equality and support for the representation of women.

Aïcha Qil, president of the Afaq Association for Women, also criticized the lack of real desire to integrate women into positions of responsibility. She said the absence of women in key positions reflects the persistence of male dominance in politics.

This situation is seen as a threat to the progress made in terms of women’s participation in the political sphere, thus compromising their involvement in public decision-making and in the country’s general policies.

Finally, Bouchra Abdou expressed his disappointment with the political class, affirming that these elected officials were expected to embody the King’s directives aimed at strengthening female representation within constitutional institutions and setting an example in matters of application of the Constitution and its democratic principles.
