4 museums dedicated to fashion to discover in Belgium

The Fashion & Lace Museum in Brussels

In the historic streets around the Grand-Place, the windows reveal ancestral know-how: Brussels lace. This textile art, admired even by royalty, finds a special place at the Fashion & Lace Museum, where Belgian creative genius is celebrated through thematic exhibitions. Currently, visitors can admire the work of Jules François Crahay, a haute couture visionary often compared to Christian Dior. His time at Maison Lanvin, where he designed more than 40 collections, not only marked his era, but opened the way for Belgian talents such as Martin Margiela, Olivier Theyskens and Nicolas di Felice, now at the head of prestigious houses. .

Rue de la Violette 12, 1000 Brussels Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Price: 10€ (full price)

The MoMu in Antwerp

Antwerp was the birthplace of haute couture figures such as Dries van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester, and it is no coincidence that the city has become a sanctuary for style enthusiasts. But for a real tête-à-tête with the most inspiring creations, the MoMu is an essential stopover. With a permanent collection of more than 35,000 pieces, the museum stands out for its immersive approach, placing clothes in their context, and thus revealing their stories. Currently, the exhibition Masquerade, Makeup & Ensor brilliantly revisits the themes of (false) coquetry, seduction, and artifice so dear to James Ensor. This dialogue between appearance and transience, skillfully staged, does not fail to arouse reflection and admiration.

MoMu, Nationalestraat 28, 2000 Antwerp Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Price: €12 (full price)

The Fashion Museum in Hasselt

Certainly less well known than other institutions dedicated to fashion, the Fashion Museum in Hasselt nonetheless remains essential. With its more than 18,000 pieces, it tells the story of the evolution of Western style since 1750. Here, there is no permanent collection frozen in time, but two major annual exhibitions which revisit the history of fashion through captivating themes. From designer shoes to bold 1960s prints, to icons such as Yves Saint Laurent and Versace, this museum offers a vibrant tribute to innovation and talent. Until January 5, 2025, the “M&Others” exhibition offers a unique exploration of the role of motherhood in fashion, a subject as rare as it is fascinating in this universe.

Gasthuisstraat 11, 3500 Hasselt Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Price: €8 (full price)

The tourist center for wool and fashion in Verviers

Verviers, once the nerve center of Europe’s wool industry, is now home to the Wool and Fashion Tourist Centre, a place dedicated to this fascinating heritage. In this interactive museum, visitors are invited to discover the entire wool transformation process, from the raw material to the textile creations. Workshops and live demonstrations, as well as a boutique, complete the experience by allowing visitors to leave with unique, locally created pieces.
