the social bond rediscovered with the wave of a wand

Chose promised, due. Chantal Subra had promised this during the electoral campaign for the 2020 municipal elections. The opening of a bakery and the development of cycle paths were among her priorities. Since July 16, the 1,200 Salesians who live in the town (2,350 inhabitants in total) can now pick up their baguette on foot! Indeed, La Maison des Saveurs opened its doors on avenue de Verdun, facing the park, in the former multipurpose room, after seven years without a bakery in the town.

The last work having been completed on October 11, the establishment of Dimitri and Stéphanie Deléage was inaugurated this Thursday, October 17 in the presence of many elected officials, including Anne-Laure Babault, municipal councilor of Salles-sur-Mer. The mayors of Vérines, Montroy, Thairé, Saint-Rogatien, La Jarne, La Jarrie, Lagord… had made the trip as well as Stéphane Villain, vice-president of the Department, Jean-François Fountaine, president of the Urban Community of , and the prefect of Charente-Maritime Brice Blondel to congratulate the completion of a project, subsidized by the State, the Department and the Urban Community of La Rochelle. “An additional asset for the town” for Stéphane Villain, “the soul of a village” for Jean-François Fountaine.

Busiest axis

After a project which began last February, this former community hall is now divided into two parts: the bakery-pastry snacking area of 230 m² and the community room of 70 m².

The House of Flavors opened its doors on avenue de Verdun, facing the park, in the former multipurpose room, after seven years without a bakery in the town.

“It can become a place to live and meet, especially for elderly people who don’t travel far to go shopping”

“After the retirement of the previous bakers who had been in the town center for fifteen years, we did not want to reopen an establishment in the same location because there was less and less traffic. We preferred to opt for a busier route with ample parking,” explains Chantal Subra.

Stéphanie and Dimitri Deléage are now at the head of two establishments, in Saint-Vivien and Salles-sur-Mer.

A call for applications was launched at the beginning of 2023. And it was Dimitri and Stéphanie Deléage who were chosen, already well known to the inhabitants of Saint-Vivien, a town located three kilometers away, where they settled with their first establishment in January 2021 Each of the two establishments has a bakery while the pastry laboratory is located in Salles-sur-Mer. And both have a tea lounge area and a terrace.

Dynamization

The new bakery complements the existing shopping offering, which is quite limited in the town: a tobacco bar, a hairdressing salon and a beauty salon. Good news for creating social bonds between residents. “It allows us to meet, to talk about the rain and the good weather, but at least to exchange,” adds Chantal Subra.

An installation eagerly awaited and requested by residents. “I had to go and buy my bread as far as Saint-Vivien or Châtelaillon-Plage, or even Angoulins, it was not practical on a daily basis. I had to make a special detour and take my car. Now, the daily commute is more consistent after school, says a mother. It’s not a village where you walk around a lot. This new bakery marks the start of a more global dynamism. »

“It can become a place to live and meet, especially for elderly people who don’t travel far to do their shopping,” adds a resident, who deplores the fact that businesses have moved away from the town.

Next project to be carried out: the development of the cycle path which connects Saint-Vivien to Châtelaillon-Plage. “The first groundbreaking is planned for early 2025 for completion of the work by summer,” specifies Chantal Subra.

In Saint-Vivien too

“We were very spoiled by their arrival. » In Saint-Vivien, Mayor Vincent Demester is delighted with the installation of Dimitri and Stéphanie Deléage in 2021. Their arrival has made other traders want to set up in their turn. “There is no competition, it has had a snowball effect. This notably allowed the Coop to establish itself. » Before their arrival, the town of 1,400 inhabitants only had a tobacco bar, which served as a bread store, and a hairdressing salon. A welcome resurgence of activity after the departure of previous traders. “About thirty years ago, there were still shops before it was fashionable to buy in a supermarket. But there, we are seeing a return to local consumption,” adds the mayor.
