Swimming: easy victory over 400m medley and new French record for Léon Marchand in Shanghai

A cascade of records has fallen on Shanghai for two days. Aligned with the short course World Cup stage, Léon Marchand is setting the counters crazy. This Sunday, the prodigy took the French record for the 400m medley with a time of 4′0′’03. He erases Jérémy Stravius and his time of 4’06”85 in 2012.

The day before, Léon Marchand had done even better by snatching the European record for the 200m medley (1′50′’30). This one belonged to the Greek Vazaios (1′50′’85 at the Euros in Glasgow in 2019). The young Frenchman’s raid had already started on Friday since he had beaten the national record for the 100m medley (50”65), previously held by Florent Manaudou (50”96).

Léon Marchand’s Asian tour is therefore going wonderfully, for his return to competition after more than two months of break. The 22-year-old took a vacation following the 2024 Olympic Games, during which he multiplied his exploits with five medals, four of which were gold.

There remains one final to compete in the Frenchman this Sunday in Shanghai: that of the 200m breaststroke. The rest of his stay in Asia will take place in Incheon, South Korea, then in Singapore, for two new short course World Cup stages.
