SENEGAL RIVER, POPULATIONS INVITED TO MAXIMUM VIGILANCE IN THE FACE OF FLOOD WAVE

Matam, Oct 19 (APS) – The governor of the Matam region (north), Saïd Dia, called on Saturday for populations living along the Senegal River to be “maximum vigilant” due to forecasts indicating the amplification of the flooding of the Senegal River.

”The current condition could worsen if the weather situation is favorable for heavy local rains. To this end, maximum vigilance is required and populations are called upon to take shelter and not take any risk by putting their lives in danger,” he wrote in a press release published at the end of a crisis meeting.

The press release states that the crisis unit set up for this purpose concluded that “the flood wave should probably pass through Matam in the coming hours, or even the coming days”.

The damage that would result would depend on the magnitude of this flood wave, but depends “also and above all on the level of vulnerability of people, infrastructure and production systems, i.e. agricultural areas”.

The warning level of the Senegal River, 8 meters at Matam, is now well exceeded and currently reaches almost 9 meters.

In addition to the overflowing of the Senegal River which caused flooding, the disaster situation prevailing in this part of Senegal was amplified by the release of water from the Manantali dam.
