SENEGAL-ENVIRONNEMENT / Bignona: launch of the “School of feminist environmental leadership and climate agency” program – Senegalese press agency

Bignona, Oct 18 (APS) – The NGO Society for International Cooperation and Development (SOCODEVI) launched, Friday, in Bignona (south), the program “School of feminist environmental leadership and climate agency”, an initiative aimed at to strengthen the power of influence of women in decision-making and improve their resilience in the face of climate challenges.

The program implemented through its Natur’ELLES project concerns 50 women from the Ziguinchor region and 50 women from the Saloum Delta.

”It is a strengthening program which aims to identify women leaders who are at the level of the women’s groups that we support. It aims to strengthen the power of influence of these women in decision-making so that they position themselves as active leaders,” explained the regional advisor on gender equality and strengthening women’s power at the SOCODEVI country office. , Mame Bineta Fall.

The NGO wants to equip the women beneficiaries with skills and practical methods.

“We want to strengthen the resilience of these women who are the most vulnerable and affected by climate change and the environmental challenges facing them and their communities,” said Ms. Fall.

She recalled that the Natur’ELLES project is a climate change adaptation project which aims to improve the resilience of women in the face of climate challenges but also, and above all, to strengthen the power of influence and decision-making capacities of women in decision-making bodies.

She believes that “the voice of women is under-represented when making decisions on governance and control of natural resources”.

”Women are the guardians of natural resources and guardians of the earth. But, when making decisions on governance and control of these same resources, their voices are under-represented,” lamented Ms. Fall.

The launch of the “School of Feminist Environmental Leadership and Climate Agency” program was an opportunity for the NGO Society for International Cooperation and Development (SOCODEVI) to celebrate at the same time the International Day of Rural Women.

SOCODEVI is a Canadian NGO which intervenes in the Ziguinchor region and in the Saloum delta for the protection of marine ecosystems, notably mangroves and the economic resilience of communities, especially women, according to its managers.

The Natur’ELLES project, financed to the tune of 20 million Canadian dollars, or approximately nine billion CFA francs, aims to adapt to climate change for more than 6,000 women and communities.
