SENEGAL-ENVIRONNEMENT / Preservation of the Falémé: local populations invited to collaborate with the FDS – Senegalese press agency

Saraya, Oct 18 (APS) – The President of the Republic invited, on Friday, the populations of the Saraya department, in the Kédougou region (south-east), to collaborate with the defense and security forces (FDS) to fight against pollution of the Falémé, the most important tributary of the Senegal River.

”For us, this is a vital question. ThisThis water is what we drink and it faces very serious pollution with cyanide and mercury and all other substances, not to mention the degradation of the environment and biodiversity,” declared Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The President of the Republic was speaking as part of a visit to the semi-mechanized sites of the Falémé River in the village of Sansamba.

The Head of State deplored the degradation of the environment and biodiversity at the Falémé River, located on the Moussala-Mahinamine border.

“We have noticed that wherever there is gold panning (…) everything that is an ecosystem is destroyed while we need this water for irrigated agriculture to a certain extent,” he lamented. .

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye also invited the State General Inspectorate (IGE) to audit semi-mechanized exploitation permits and mining titles.

He indicated, in substance, that the Ministries of Mines and Environmentvironment were doing this investigative work.

Mr. Faye underlined that the history of more than thirty villages is linked to the Falémé River, evoking the agricultural and market gardening activities practiced by the riverside populations.

He announced that the State of Senegal has started discussions with Mali and the Republic of Guinea so that appropriate measures can be taken as quickly as possible in terms of environmental and social measures and assessments.

The President of the Republic isexpected tomorrow Saturday in the commune of Khossanto to visit the Sored mine.
