The same sentence was handed down at first instance in 2022, by the Moselle Assize Court, against this 34-year-old man, accused of having shot Logan Schmidt, 22, three times in the street .
On Thursday, Attorney General Virginie Kaplan requested “a sentence of eighteen to twenty years” against the accused, estimating that “the homicidal intent at the time when Kevin Boulesteix intentionally shot Logan Schmidt a second and third time” was not there is no doubt.
“Logan was hit by three shots, including a fatal shot in the chest which pierced him right through and punctured his lung,” recalled the representative of the public prosecutor. This shot couldn’t have gone off on its own, it’s impossible.
She also recalled “the organized chase” with the brother of the accused, the next day, representing “ten days of stalking” to finally arrest him in an apartment in Palavas-Les-Flots (Hérault).
The motive for the crime oscillates between drug debt and humiliated ego.
For the attorney general, “Kevin Boulesteix destroyed the life of a 22-year-old young man and a family under the pretext of taking justice into his own hands, it is the way of thugs, of mafiosi.”
On June 2, 2019, Logan Schmidt was sitting in front of his girlfriend’s home when, late in the afternoon, a car in which Kevin Boulesteix was traveling pulled up to him.
The latter took out a gun, advanced towards Logan and shot him in the foot, before striking him twice more. Kevin Boulesteix has consistently said that the shots “went off on their own,” that it was an “accident.”
This is what his lawyers Samira Boudiba and Lee Takhermit tried to demonstrate during their pleadings, hoping, without success, to have the facts reclassified as fatal violence having led to death without the intention of causing it.
When the verdict was announced, the victim’s mother, Christiane Schmidt, said she was “finally relieved”: “Logan will be able to rest in peace now.”
