In La Réole (Gironde), the Friends of the Organ association is launching its fall event: a Junior Organist Challenge. Around ten young organists under the age of 21, from the Réolais Music School in Sud-Gironde, from Bergerac and Bordeaux, will take turns on Sunday October 20, 2024 on the keyboards for illustrate the fantastic tale in music “Gargantaz and the flight of the white phoenix” whose text, written tailor-made for the organ of La Réole, refers to its history and its particularities.

An event where story sequences and music will alternate. The readings will be provided by two theater enthusiasts who will lend their voices: Jean-Louis Vern and Marielle Guillon. “Young musicians, for their part, are invited to create a real musical productionto express oneself by creating an atmosphere, emotions…”, specifies the association.

“Let them move towards repertoire pieces or improvisationsfree to them. And it doesn’t matter what level or years of experience each person has, as long as they follow a line of ideas,” says Les Amis de l’Orgue.

“If you only play one note or one rest, fill them with music.” It’s not just about performing (too?) well-learned pieces. Here, we play music, we don’t perform it! » declares the association. And it is thus, in shared passion, that they prepared their interventions with the help of their teachers, Marielle Guillon and Uriel Valadeau.

No competition

A challenge? Yes but… “The originality of this event is to resolutely take the opposite view of the competition and to overturn the notion of competition by joining the point of view of Albert Jacquard: ‘I don’t have to be stronger than ‘other, but stronger than myself thanks to the other’… and also thanks to the Réolais organ which, with its sound possibilities, becomes a partner of choice! » notes the association. Confusing? Maybe… but that’s where the challenge lies, the challenge to take up. Chick!
