A unique mobile unit in installed at University Hospital to manage epidemics

The University Hospital Center (CHU) of (Maine-et-) has just acquired a unique system in to care for patients potentially affected by the Ebola virus, report The Echoes. This mobile unit of “high isolation”called the Elytron, makes it possible to treat people with symptoms of viral hemorrhagic fever, while protecting the rest of the population and caregivers.

This mini-hospital, made up of a container and semi-rigid parts, can be transported by truck and assembled in three hours. Inside, different airlocks and rooms with negative pressure, which make it possible to contain the spread of a virus and provide first aid to patients. If tests confirm Ebola infection, then the patient may be referred to hospital.

Other possible uses

It is “innovative equipment, unique in France, put in place to fight against epidemic and biological risks (REB)”declares to West France Cécile Jaglin-Grimomprez, general director of Angers University Hospital (Maine-et-Loire). Eighty staff members are to be trained in the use of the Elytron.

The device can also be deployed for “exceptional health situations”. We can also carry out vaccination operations there, take samples in the event of an epidemic or even transfer injured people there if the hospital is overwhelmed. The unit can be moved to other territories. The Elytron cost around €600,000, financed by the Regional Health Agency (ARS).
