His voice is a little hoarse. The party was long. With 573 votes, Marie-Bertrande Duay was elected to the Municipal Council of Martigny. The UDC will participate for the first time in the executive of this city always ruled by radicals. Winner of last weekend’s vote, the largest party in the country progressed by seven seats in Valais. It is now represented in the four French-speaking towns of the canton. On Sunday, when she heard her name, Marie-Bertrande Duay “burst into tears”. For her, “it’s a dream come true.” She smiles: “We made history. I’m proud, happy and a little surprised.”

At 28, she obtained her first elected mandate. She has just finished her internship as a lawyer and is preparing for her bar exams, scheduled for November. She hopes to obtain responsibility for the municipal police. According to her, “we have one of the only police forces in the canton which has not followed the evolution of community policing”. She delivers a clear message: “There are poorly frequented places like the train station, where you can find drug dealers and beggars who may be victims of trafficking. We must act before we have the same crime problems as in Vevey or Lausanne.”
