Weather: why has it been so hot for 24 hours in the – Pas-de-, will it last?

Everyone will have noticed: it has been strangely hot in the – Pas-de- since Wednesday. It was 24°C in , 23°C in Calais, 22°C in , i.e. levels 7 to 9°C higher than seasonal norms. And this Thursday morning, it’s still 20°C in Lille, and around 18°C on the coast.

Meteorologist Guillaume Woznica speaks of an “Indian summer” on the X network, formerly Twitter. “While the #bad weather concerns the south-east of the country, the atmosphere is summery in certain northern regions… The #heat threshold (from 25°C in weather) has been reached (probably for the last time in 2024) in , Île-de-, Burgundy, Champagne-Ardenne and even in Hauts-de-France! In #, the thermometer reached 25.8°C shortly after 2:30 p.m. “, he writes, warning that temperatures will drop quickly in the coming hours. “This is the highest #temperature observed this late in the year since 1954 (26°C recorded on October 18, 1954). The mercury will drop significantly tomorrow, losing up to 8°C in 24 hours… #indiansummer ».

Guillaume Séchet, meteorologist, also noted heat thresholds exceeded in the north this Wednesday, October 16. Still on the X network, this Thursday, October 17, some Internet users also confided their astonishment: “It’s 18.5° this morning in the countryside, almost the maximum temperature expected during the day for mid-October.#heat », remarked Yann V. A feeling which contrasts with the rains which fall in the south of the country. Météo-France has placed four departments in the South/South-East on orange rain-flood and thunderstorm alert.

The same goes for the temperatures during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, notes Guillaume Séchet. “ The night was truly record-breaking with a national average of 15.8°C, worthy of a summer night! The map below is particularly telling. We note that night temperatures remained above 15°C over more than half of the territory, unprecedented so late in the year. », he writes on Météo-Villes, insisting in particular on the fact that certain temperatures are all the more significant because they occur in the second part of the month of October, and this when the nights have already lengthened ‘an hour (50 minutes).

How to explain this? “From the Gulf of Genoa to the North Sea, the atmosphere is particularly humid. This is explained – in part – by the subtropical origin of the air mass, fueled by the remains of ex-Hurricane Leslie which washed up on the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the week », Specifies the meteorologist. “ Who says humid air says feeling of accentuated heat. »

Temperatures will gradually drop until Sunday, according to forecasts from Météo-France, which notes that it should be 16°C in Lille on Saturday afternoon, or 8°C less than Wednesday. But the weather looks set to be quite mild with clearings.
