PHOTOS – vigilance in Lozère: 200 mm of water in a few hours in Vialas, the garage flooded

We have already experienced episodes in the Cévennes, but this one is of exceptional intensity” confides Julien Barrial, manager of the garage which bears his name in Vialas, a town of 350 inhabitants located in the south of Lozère. His weather station recorded 200 mm of water in the morning on Wednesday, leading to the rise of the numerous rivers which border the town. (Le Rieutort, Le Luech, La Goudrouze, l’Homol and la Vérié). His garage, located below the road, quickly found itself flooded. “We are in an old building, when we arrived, we had our feet in the water and then there was a big flood and the water came in everywhere. We dismantled all the offices, the credit card terminal… We will remain closed until Friday to be able to put everything back in order.

Vialas cut off from the world in 2021

In 2021, the town was cut off from the world following a previous episode in the Cévennes. “Since then, the municipality has carried out work. The rainwater network has been redone, the gutters have been cleaned. Rockfills were rebuilt, as well as the bridges which had been washed away. For the moment, it’s holding up. Municipal employees still went out to clear the mud from the roads, but the biggest part was still to come. We try to anticipate everything by transferring everything from the garage to the house. We try to play things down because it’s just equipment, but it’s annoying because it’s our working tool. If we lose this, we lose everything.” Lozère remains placed on alert until Thursday 9 p.m.
