the incinerator will finally be built in Sonzay

It will ultimately be Sonzay. The Touraine Proprietary joint union released the conclusions of its consultation on the construction of two energy recovery units (UVE, incinerators), which took place from May 15 to July 14, 2024.

The UVE of Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt, in Chinonais, will thus be rebuilt on the site of the current incinerator, which is reaching the end of its life. That of Sonzay should see the light of day on the landfill site. The two other sites considered were those of Parçay-Meslay, which had encountered strong local opposition, and , near the air base.

A reduction in household waste of 21% in 2030 in the Metropolis

“From the start of the consultation, we received unfavorable opinions from state services for the air base, then for Parçay-Meslayindicates Martin Cohen, vice-president in charge of waste and ecological and energy transition at Tours Métropole and president of Touraine propriety. This pushed us very quickly towards Sonzay. »

However, the site is currently managed by a private company, in this case the French group Suez. “It doesn’t make our job easier, but we will work with them”he continues.

Because these two UVEs will be financed by private funds, recalls the president of Touraine Propre. “This will involve public service delegations, investments (between 160 and 180 million euros in total) will be carried by the private sector. For their part, the communities undertake to bring them waste, with a price fixed per tonne, on which we will remain vigilant, so that the cost is as reasonable as possible for the inhabitants. » The start-up of the Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt UVE is planned “between 2030 and 2031”, while that of Sonzay should see the light of day “one year later, between 2031 and 2032”.

But the consultation also allowed the Metropolis to raise its requirements in terms of reducing the production of incinerable waste. “The overall objective is the same for green waste, that which goes to the landfill or for recyclable waste, since we are aiming for a reduction of 16% between 2022 and 2030explains Martin Cohen. But with regard to black trash waste, the consultation and the figures for the year 2023 have shown us that, in the metropolis of Tours, we can go further, up to a reduction of 21%. »

The elected representative in fact recalls that a Tourangeau produces “on average a little over 500 kg of waste per year. Among them, 200 kg is waste that ends up in the household waste bin. »

This would represent the disappearance of one in five household waste bins by 2030. “This is the part that interests us, since it is what allows us to size the incinerator and the waste that we send to the UVE in Lasse (Maine-et-). »
