Angry farmers “walk” city signs

This weekend, the signs in certain towns in Drôme were reversed, near Tain l’Hermitage. A way for the peasant world to express, for the moment peacefully, its dissatisfaction with the promises made by the government last January and still not kept according to the farmers. Europe 1 went to the village of Larnage in Drôme.

When motorists arrive in Larnage, they have reason to be disturbed. In fact, the sign at the entrance to the town displays a name other than that of the village. “We dismantled the panels in 13 municipalities. And we exchanged the names. So now Larnage is called Chantemerle-les-Blés, Chantemerle-les-Blés is called Larnage, Pont de l’Isère is called Chanos-Curson … So we really walked around the municipalities in the territory, like the government walks us around,” an angry farmer told Europe 1.

A palpable sense of fed up among Jean-Philippe Banc, fruit and vegetable producer, and among all the farmers of the Drôme… “Keep your promises,” they tell the government. “We believed in it. At the end of the mobilizations, we said to ourselves that the government was at the table, there was going to be progress. There were a lot of promises and then behind it, a lot of disappointments. Today , we are at zero, or even less than zero. The government must provide real resources for agriculture,” declares Jean-Philippe Banc, fruit and vegetable producer and president of the canton’s young farmers.

A rising anger

For the farmer, exasperation is starting to gain ground among the operators. “It’s not going to stop there, that’s for sure. Today, people are out of breath, out of cash. We’re having seasons that are catastrophic. We have no vision for the next ones. So we really need to provide very concrete and very rapid responses to ease the suffering in the countryside because people are losing everything,” he emphasizes again to Europe 1.

An anger that could very quickly boil over. And go even further than the road blockages at the start of the year.
