In the metropolis of , “we are seeking to innovate” for child protection

Lucie Vacher, environmental vice-president for Children, Families and Youth, presents the four initiatives that the metropolis of has just presented, particularly for specialized prevention and for young adults. Despite the unfavorable context.

Since your metropolis has the same skills in child protection as the departments, you have just announced an “overhaul” of its specialized prevention policy. What does it consist of?

Lucie Vacher
The specialized prevention intervention framework in Lyon was quite old: it went back to 1993-1996, at the time of the Rhône department. After having its audit carried out in 2022, we decided to review it by lowering the intervention age of our 110 educators to 10 years (compared to 12 years previously, Editor’s note).

We are indeed seeing an increasingly early entry into delinquency, particularly for these young people involved in drug trafficking, as lookouts, before dropping out of school.

Our specialized prevention therefore focuses on school perseverance, as well as parenting support, the prevention of risky behavior and the development of the power to act.

And it continues to aim for social, professional and medico-social integration, with the support of two street psychologists.

Are you, at the same time, providing more resources for specialized prevention?

L. V.
We remain at a constant budget in 2025. We have the same problems as the other departments, and the question may have been asked of reducing this budget. But we are protecting it, at 8.7 million euros (M€), after increasing it by almost 10% at the start of the mandate.
