“Dying while awakening consciences”: in Nîmes, Dasen du ’s tribute to Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard

At the DSDEN du (Departmental Directorate of National Education), the tribute to teachers Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard took place in a solemn atmosphere.

“Let us remember these two people who lost their lives at their workplace.” The Dasen* of Gard and former associate professor of PE, Christophe Mauny, followed by the DSDEN teams, marked a minute of silence in tribute to the two teachers murdered three years apart: “On October 16, 2020 and October 13, 2023, our two teachers fell. The first, for having shown a caricature of Mohammed”; le second, Dominique Bernard, stabbed by a radicalized Islamist former student. “There is nothing more unacceptable than dying for one’s profession, while raising awareness,” continues the Dasen du Gard.

Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard, “unacceptable victims of a school attack”

If the school has the mission of raising awareness, the DSDEN has the task of setting the objectives of the educational policy and the teaching methods: “So that young people are confronted from a very young age with different discourses, without confusing them, to form their own ideas, little by little. […] for this our children must have access to education.”

Martyrdom“Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard were the unacceptable victims of an attack on the school. This minute of silence is to collectively say that we have not forgotten them” will end with these words, the Dasen du Gard.
