A snake found in a garden in Saint-Barthélemy-d’Anjou

A snake was discovered at the end of September in a residential garden in Saint-Barthélemy-d’Anjou, a town located very close to Angers. The information, reported by our colleagues at West Francereports a moment of panic when the residents, quietly installed on their terrace, saw the reptile slipping furtively a few meters from them.

Although unusual, this type of encounter is becoming more frequent in certain areas due to the movement of species towards urbanized environments, often caused by the degradation of their natural habitats.

A successful capture

After watching videos on the Internet, they improvised a capture plan using everyday tools. After more than an hour of effort, the snake was safely enclosed in a bucket. The firefighters contacted advised releasing the reptile in an isolated place, far from homes.

Subsequently, it was identified as a green and yellow snake, a protected species in France and non-venomous, common in Maine-et-Loire. Although snakes can cause fear, the bite of this harmless species plays an essential role in the balance of local ecosystems.
