7,000 people for the Walk of Hope in Geneva

A GenevaPierre-Henri Pingeon and Laurent Thurnherr were elected on Sunday to the positions of titular and substitute magistrate respectively, during the second round of the election of the Court of Auditors. This election did not mobilize voters: the participation rate reached only 15.92%.

The magistrates will take office for six years in January 2025, at the same time as the four others elected in the first round on September 22. All are part of the common list of the PLR, the Center, the PS and the Vert-es.

Accountant Pierre-Henri Pingeon (PLR) obtained 18,520 votes. The independent and former federal prosecutor Félix Reinmann is second with 15,599 votes. Liberal Green Mark Brendow comes last with 7,063 votes.

The position of substitute goes to PLR Laurent Thurnherr (24,299 votes). This lawyer is well ahead of Sandra Golay (15,087 votes) who was presented by the Liberties and Social Justice movement.

The newly elected Court of Auditors is therefore complete. The three incumbent seats will be occupied by Sophie Forster Carbonnier (Les Vert-es), the current president of the institution which represented herself, Fabien Mangilli (PS) and Pierre-Henri Pingeon. The three substitutes are Nathalie Brender (Le Center), Frédéric Varone (PS) who represented himself, and Laurent Thurnherr.

Independence

The common list, which brought together four parties represented in government, aimed to avoid the politicization of an independent institution whose mission is to control the management of the cantonal administration, municipalities, public law establishments and subsidized private organizations. The Green Liberals and the LJS movement failed to shake up this alliance.

Established in 2007, the Court of Auditors exercises autonomous and independent control. This veritable “administration policeman” produces resounding reports, the latest being that on the overbilling of SIGs. The Court of Auditors has also been reviewing the state accounts since 2017.

Low participation

This second round did not mobilize the crowds. The low participation is explained in particular by the fact that this election was not grouped with other voting objects, indicates the chancellery. The lowest rate recorded in recent years was 27.8% in November 2012. This was already an election of the Court of Auditors.
