As the information meeting planned for La Ferté-sous-Jouarre approaches next week, Pays Briard was interested in the measures put in place by the municipality or by the Department to encourage selective sorting among residents and therefore waste management in general.

A reminder of the collection rules

In La Ferté-sous-Jouarre and in the surrounding municipalities, waste collection is organized by Covaltri 77, a public waste collection and treatment service. The organization ensures collection through the use of robotic trucks and has been fighting for years to reduce the number of waste per inhabitant: “With 546 kg [de déchets] per capita in 2021, we are still far from the objective of 526 kg,” explains its president Daniel Durand. In the town of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, just in terms of glass, more than 238.7 tonnes were collected in 2023which represents approximately 29.2 kg per capita.

Concerning the sorting rules, it should be remembered that household waste must be put in closed bags and placed in black trash cansthe lid of which must be closed. Inside these bins, which will be collected by the technical services on Thursday morning, we find food scraps, dirty paper or even diapers… In short, everything that cannot be recycled. For waste that can be recycled, such as paper, cardboard or even plastic or metal packaging, it must be placed in trash cans with yellow lidswhich will be picked up on Friday morning. Finally, trash cans with green lids are used to place leaves, flowers and residues of grass and cut branches between the beginning of April and the end of November. This waste is collected on Wednesday morning.

When sorting helps fight cancer

One of the particularities of waste management in the north of Seine-et- and particularly in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre is the commitment of the collection organization to La Ligue contre le cancer. For several years now, for each ton of glass collected, the intercommunal union in charge of the treatment and recovery of household waste (SMITOM) of Seine-et-Marne has donated 1 euro to the organization. In La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, with 283.7 tonnes of glass collected, this represents around 284 euros in favor of the fight against cancer. Since August 2024, the payment has increased to 2 euros per tonne, with the aim of raising awareness among residents.

Raising awareness will be one of the challenges of the information meeting next Friday, with the main objective of further reducing the number of waste per inhabitant.
