A car salesman and the manager of a vehicle technical inspection center were sentenced Thursday evening.
It is 10:15 p.m. this Thursday, October 10, when the decision falls at the Nîmes criminal court chaired by Jérôme Reynes. There is commotion at the courthouse at this late hour because the police have just arrested a car salesman. After a seven-hour hearing, he was found guilty in two cases of trafficking in automobile odometers.
Mohamed B, aged around forty, received a 5-year prison sentence accompanied by a committal warrant. He is a repeat offender since he was convicted for similar offenses in 2020. In addition, he is permanently banned from working in the automobile trade and no longer has the right to manage a business. He must pay a fine of 20,000 euros and a civil interest hearing is scheduled in the coming months concerning the possible reimbursement of the civil parties. Nearly 100 people have been victims of the actions of these scammers.
If the “scam” was possible, it was thanks to the complicity of the manager of a technical inspection center, a certain Ali D. The mileage of the vehicles sold to individuals was distorted. “During the investigations, problems were revealed with two technical controls: the second had less mileage than the first!”summarizes President Reynes. For example, a vehicle with 220,000 kilometers was sold with a displayed mileage and therefore distorted by 159,000 kilometers.
Ali D, the “manager” of technical inspection, aged around thirty, is punished by 3 years in prison with a two-year probationary suspension. He has the obligation to compensate the victims and pay a fine of 5,000 euros. In this case, there were four defendants in total for acts from 2018 to 2021. Two men were acquitted.
