“The exploitation of oil and gas projects must not negatively impact fishing activity,” declares Birame Souleye Diop

A community forum for mobilization and engagement of stakeholders in oil and gas projects in Senegal opened on Friday in Saint-Louis (north), under the chairmanship of the Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines , Birame Souleye Diop.

This meeting with community stakeholders is organized by the Ministry of Energy, Oil and Mines, in conjunction with the USAID/TRACES program as part of the regional consultation with the stakeholders of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project.

“This meeting today is not intended to make promises but rather to develop in-depth discussions and try to find lasting solutions,” declared Minister Birame Souleye Diop at the opening of the forum.

He adds that “the exploitation of oil and gas projects must not negatively impact fishing activity”.

According to him, these activities must coexist together, also emphasizing the important role of companies such as BP, Petrosen but also Kosmos, in the context of the exploitation of oil and gas projects in Senegal.

The prefect of the department of Saint-Louis, Abou Sow, the representative of the neighborhood delegates, Moussa Dièye, the representative of the Association of Women Transformers of Guet Ndar, Fatou Bineta Sarr, among other personalities, took part in this forum community.

Senegal has discovered significant oil and gas resources, particularly offshore. Currently, the Sangomar project has started production and that of Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) is in the process of starting production, according to a document reviewed by the APS.

The exploitation of oil and gas resources constitutes a lever for propelling the country’s economic growth and social development, adds the same source.
