The Brussels public prosecutor’s office has confirmed several complaints of indecent behavior in the Bois de la Cambre in Brussels. A young girl testified on Facebook, she explains that she was the victim of rape there.
The facts already date back to this summer, according to several sources. Four young women were allegedly sexually assaulted in the Bois de la Cambre, not far from the famous Jeux d’hiver nightclub. They filed a complaint.
A young girl, who presents herself as one of four women, writes on a Facebook group: “The danger is much closer than we imagine. Thursday 26 (last September), after leaving the Winter Games, I returned alone on foot crossing the Bois de la Cambre. Shortly after entering the woods, a man grabbed me from behind by the throat, he told me that no one would be able to hear me, because there was no one around, and that I I had no choice but to obey his orders. I’ll spare you the details of what follows. Never cross the Bois de la Cambre alone, especially at night.“
The events took place at different times. The prosecution confirms the complaints of sexual assault, but insists that there is nothing to indicate that it was the same attacker each time. This is not the first time that the Bois de la Cambre has been the scene of attacks. The associations denounce the inaction of the authorities.
“The problem with the Bois de la Cambre is that it is huge and very poorly lit, there is very little security there.“, says Maïté Meeûs, the founder of the Balance Ton Bar movement. She adds: “But I would like to remind you that sexual violence happens everywhere and all the time. I think there are a lot of proposals for measures. There was a plan recently launched by the city of Brussels called 77 measures to combat sexist harassment in public spaces. I think 10% of these measures have been implemented, so it’s time to get on with it.”
