The online music platform informed its users this week that it will increase the cost of its ad-free monthly subscription plans before the end of the year.

Individual accounts will increase by $1.70 per month to $12.69 before taxes, while Spotify’s popular family accounts – which allow up to six users – will climb by $4 to 20, $99 per month.

Student plans will increase by 40 cents per month to $6.39. Finally, duo plans will increase by $2.90, for a total of $17.89 per month.

Spotify last raised prices for Canadian subscribers just over a year ago, while its subscription prices increased in the United States last summer.

The company said in a statement that it considers several elements when deciding when to raise prices, including the innovation of its services and “macroeconomic factors.”

She also noted that she had filed a legal challenge over new federal streaming regulations, which would force major foreign platforms to contribute financially to Canadian content.

The Digital Media Association, which represents the world’s largest music streaming companies including Spotify, has warned regulators that this could lead to higher subscription prices, making such services less affordable.
