Inauguration of the Nizon renaturation work in Lirac – News

Updated on 11/10/2024

The Nizon is a river with a length of 12.4km which crosses the vineyards of the villages of Lirac and Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres. It takes its source in the center of the commune of Lirac, at the Fontbesse washhouse.

Over the years its course has been modified to adapt to the human activities that have taken root. Today its course is no longer natural and its condition is seriously degraded.

A river renaturation project was carried out, with the aim of:

  • restore a space for proper functioning of the watercourse
  • install vegetation adapted to climate change
  • diversify habitats favorable to fauna and flora
  • locally reduce the “flood” risk

The project was carried out by the AB Cèze Syndicate in partnership with the municipality of Lirac and the Rhodanien Agglomeration. It was 50% financed by the Rhône Méditerranée Corse Water Agency to the tune of 542,750 euros.

Thursday October 10, Jérôme Bonet, prefect of Gard, in the presence of Benoît Trichot, president SM AB Cèze, Jean Christian Rey, president of the Agglomeration of Gard Rhodanien as well as Cédric Clemente, mayor of Lirac, inaugurated the renaturation of the Nizon river in Lirac.
