Of the colorful cotton bags for people with cancer be you. The branch of l’association Lovely Solidarity works for improve the well-being of patients treated for breast cancer in Calvados hospitals such as the Caen University Hospital or the François Baclesse Center.

To put the suction bottles

THE 260 Calvadosian seamstresses of the association make fabric bags, 100% cottonwhich are used to put the drains (long tubes which connect the operated area to transparent bottles to evacuate secretions). They are present after chest removal and are often frightening for visitors and inconvenient for the patient.

“These bottles cannot be held by hand and often patients put them in plastic bags or trash bags,” explains Ursula Cardinaux, one of the two Calvados coordinators for the association since May 2024.

A little note written by children is also slipped into the bag, to bring a smile to those who receive it.

Constantly looking for seamstresses

The association, constantly looking for seamstressesprovides free bag patterns and fabric for those who don’t have any. “There are two shapes of bags. Small ones that can hold two bottles and larger ones that can hold four or five. »

Once the seamstresses have completed the bags, they can deposit them with two partners of the association : Mondial Tissus in Mondeville and Tissus d’Isa in Rots. “We will then collect them to give them to hospitals. »

6,500 seamstresses throughout

The Lovely Solidarity association has existed since 2019 in Belgium. “The designer was affected by breast cancer and found herself with the problem of visible suction bottles which scared her son a little. » The idea of ​​the colorful bag came to him. “There are no visible seams or zippers so as not to interfere with the drain wires,” explains Ursula.

In 2021, the French antenna is launched. Today, the association has 6,500 seamstresses. Ursula discovered the association by chance on the vacation road while listening to a report on the radio. “I thought it was really good. And then my mother-in-law died of breast cancer, so we knew this situation. »

She started as a seamstress, giving 1 hour of her time during the week. Today, as coordinator, she is more involved in helping the association grow and become known in the department.

It gives patients a little joy and gives them the strength to fight against this disease.

Between 150 and 200 bags are distributed each year in each of the different partner hospitals in France.
