Switzerland plays big in Serbia – rts.ch

Switzerland is playing big in the Nations League this Saturday in Leskovac (8:45 p.m./RTS 2). Act III of Serbia – Switzerland risks being as fierce as the first two in Kaliningrad and Doha.

Beaten by Denmark and Spain, Switzerland cannot afford a third defeat in a row in this group stage of the League of Nations. It would practically be synonymous with relegation to League B even if the precedent of 2022 is the exception which confirms the rule. Switzerland had ensured its survival at the expense of the Czech Republic after losing its first three matches.

The importance of having an Xhaka at the top

Even if the speech hammered out for days wants us to believe that this match is a match like any other, this Serbia – Switzerland will not be so because of the sole presence of Granit Xhaka. Expelled last month in Denmark, will Xhaka have the nerves to face a hostile? Two years ago in Doha, he was the main actor in a detestable end to the match which saw the Serbs, under the influence of disappointment, exceed many limits.

It will take Granit Xhaka at the top of his game to lead Switzerland to victory on Saturday. In Geneva against Spain, the weight of his absence was cruelly felt. In Leskovac, he will have to put his stamp on the match, to orchestrate the play of a Swiss team which must be able to find the fault against an opponent who has never been able to cultivate this rigor in the past defense without which nothing is possible. After being beaten by Switzerland in the last two World Cups, Serbia remains in a failed Euro 2024 with an inglorious elimination in the first round. Despite the talent of their individuals, the Serbs never cease to disappoint.
