Against the shortage of dentists in Finistère, the dental faculty of is increasing its staff

When will there be a dentist for each resident in Finistère? If the problem is difficult to resolve, many of them work on a solution. Starting with the dental faculty, which, from the start of the 2025 school year, will welcome 50 students per class, compared to 36 currently. The first step in a development process which should allow the Brest faculty to better respond to the needs of the population. “At present, Finistère has one dental surgeon per 1,480 inhabitants. However, a dental surgeon can only treat 831 patients per year, explains Professor Sylvie Boisramé, dean of the faculty of odontology in Brest. In this context, we consider it important that the dental faculty of Brest highlights its potential and participates in a solution to limit this problem. »

To increase its capacity, the dental faculty was able to count on financial support from UBO, the City and Metropolitan Area of Brest as well as the Regional Health Agency. “These funds allowed us in particular to change the ghost simulators on which the students train,” explains Sylvie Boisramé.

Better geographical distribution of internships

The director of the faculty has also submitted a file to the State to obtain other funds, allocated within the framework of a State-Region plan contract (CEPR). “It’s a way for the Brest faculty of dentistry to regain its place on the university scene. We are keen to move to new premises in order to welcome even more students in the future. CEPR funds would allow us to have a real fundamental identity and to recruit teachers and staff to supervise young people. »

With a view to limiting the shortage of dentists in certain areas of the territory, the faculty is also considering a better geographical distribution of internship sites for 6th year students. “Right now there are holes in the racket. This is why we are going to approach city practitioners to encourage them to take 6th year students, explains Sylvie Boisramé. We are also working on agreements with peripheral establishments, such as the hospital. Ideally, we would like local authorities, when they can, to participate in providing housing. »
