Arm wrestling in sight. Local authorities will have to put their hands in their pockets

In his general policy statement the new Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, announced that he wanted to reduce this deficit to 5% next year (3% by 2029 to meet the targets set by Brussels). To achieve this, his government plans to make 60 billion savings, and ask 5 billionto local authorities (town halls, departments, regions). Which quickly caused the main stakeholders to react.

While the head of government accuses local authorities of reduce public spending Ali Rabeh, mayor of (), expressed his disgust. And to remember that, during the various crises – Covid, urban revolts of 2023, but also in everyday affairs, such as school, transport… – these are the mayors who were on the front lineto “compensate for the desertion of the State”.

The French will be “penalized”

Philippe Laurent, mayor of Sceaux (Hauts-de-Seine) and vice-president of the AMF, went further on X, predicting that the government was going to “penalize the French”, first and foremost the most vulnerable.
