the de Chênes tunnel, in Hayange, closed two nights for work this week

“The de Chênes tunnel has the same level of safety as that of Mont Blanc! It is upgraded for five meters: it measures 295 m, while its category of equipment corresponds to those over 300 m…” explains Benoît Racadot, head of the DIR-Est center in Villers-la-Montagne. Since the installation of new devices in 2019, the team has had to close the structure more regularly. And, from now on, at the rate of three times a year.

What closures?

The last maintenance operation of 2024 is planned for the nights of Wednesday October 9 to Friday October 11. Both evenings, traffic will be neutralized over 10 km, in both directions of traffic, from the Nilvange interchange to the Havange interchange. From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., diversions will be put in place by the “men in yellow”. In addition, the entrance ramps on the A30 will be closed at Havange and Fontoy, in the Longwy- direction.

What work?

On the tunnel side, the objective will be to ensure the maintenance and repair of the famous safety equipment. On the program, “many things which will not be visible to the user”, notes Benoît Racadot: cleaning of lighting fixtures, repair of emergency call stations, checking of barriers, smoke or fire sensors, fire extinguishers, etc. Everything will be entrusted to around twenty employees of service companies, present every night.

What benefit?

Outside of the structure, DIR-Est agents will be working on sweeping the road and washing the traffic signs. “Taking advantage of the nighttime closure prevents us from neutralizing traffic lanes for this work during the day,” points out Benoît Racadot. The Castine area will also benefit from a clean-up. From the start to the end of the operation, it will be closed, just like the Bois des Tillots area. This is to prevent a user from leaving in the middle of the night, right in the middle of the construction site…
