PLQ leadership: André Fortin and Madwa-Nika Cadet support Charles Milliard

MPs André Fortin and Madwa-Nika Cadet lined up behind Charles Milliard in the race for leadership of the Liberal Party of Quebec.

With MP Virginie Dufour last week, the former CEO of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Quebec can therefore count on the support of three members of the caucus in his attempt to succeed Dominique Anglade.

Former minister André Fortin will act as president of the fundraising campaign, while Madwa-Nika Cadet becomes co-president of the campaign.

In total, four people co-chair Mr. Milliard’s campaign, with former ministers Lucie Charlebois and Jean D’Amour, as well as Nicolas Proulx, also announced on Tuesday.

The forces are beginning to take shape in view of the leadership race, the outcome of which will be known on June 14.

Within the Liberal caucus, MP Désirée McGraw lined up behind former federal minister Pablo Rodriguez, while her colleague Sona Lakhoyan Olivier will campaign alongside Frédéric Beauchemin.

Denis Coderre and Marc Bélanger have not announced support within the Liberal delegation for the moment.

Youth vote

At a press briefing to present his new allies, Charles Milliard commented on the desire of the liberal association of Montarville, which wishes to modify the current rules where young people will have 33% of the votes to decide the next leader.

“I think it would send a terrible message to Quebec youth to diminish the importance they have in the Quebec Liberal Party,” he said.

Historically, those under 25 represent a third of the votes in PLQ bodies. However, this is the first time that the Liberal leader will be chosen by a universal vote, rather than by delegates sent by each riding, where the weight of this formula was less important.

Questioned on this subject, the interim leader of the PLQ also seemed in favor of maintaining the status quo.

“Make them young,” Marc Tanguay told the various candidates in the running, inviting them to recruit new activists.

However, he specified, the members of the Liberal Party will have the last word at the next congress in Lévis, on November 8.
